IonSight to be integrated into Honeywell's Battery Manufacturing Excellence Program

Honeywell selects Titan Advanced Energy Solutions’ IonSight battery cell inspection technology for integration into its Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform

Houston, October 7th, 2024  Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) and Titan Advanced Energy Solutions (Titan) have entered in an agreement, which includes a demonstration showcase of Titan’s IonSight battery inspection platform, featuring its defect detection, cell uniformity determination and layer misalignment detection capabilities. Gigafactory partners will be offered a proof-of-concept demonstration, highlighting API-level integration with Honeywell’s Battery MXP, an end-to-end solution for smart battery manufacturing.

The project will deliver comprehensive, end-to-end visibility to cell manufacturing operations seeking cost-effective, high-quality battery production at scale.  In a marked departure from inference-based inspection methods, such as electrochemical inspection (OCV, DCIR), or subsampling solutions, such as CT scans, Titan’s patented ultrasound solution captures a data-rich view of battery morphology for every cell, mapping and tracking process variability.  IonSight’s software creates vast arrays of data that serve as inputs for proprietary AI-based algorithms, generating comprehensive insights about the cell and the manufacturing process.

"Our collaboration with Honeywell marks a significant step forward in our mission to help manufacturers deliver safe, high-quality batteries at a price accessible to all," said Shawn Murphy, Co-founder and CEO of Titan Advanced Energy Solutions. "By integrating IonSight into Honeywell's Battery MXP, we’re not just enhancing inspection capabilities—we’re fundamentally transforming smart manufacturing. This partnership establishes a closed feedback loop between the product and the production floor, enabling manufacturers to achieve advanced levels of quality and efficiency at scale. This is key to making next-gen battery technologies accessible and affordable for everyone." The project’s focus reflects the industry’s immediate need for advanced quality methods to support the rapid expansion of global battery production.

“The energy transition requires safe and reliable energy storage using lithium-ion batteries. Existing end of line QA/QC processes cannot inspect 100% of the produced cells leading to quality escapes. Titan AES automated ultrasound inline inspection capability combined with advanced AI/ML algorithms is a tremendous step in the direction to completely defect free lithium-ion batteries,” said Fredrik Westerberg, Marketing Director at Honeywell Industrial Automation.
